Womenswear Designer Son Jung Wan Talks About City Parenting and a Life in Fashion

Son Jung Wan with son David Kim

Son Jung Wan creates chic, feminine designs for bold urbane women, available on racks in over 40 high-end boutiques worldwide. We tracked down this busy fashion maven, the proud mother of 13-year-old David Kim, to explore how she balances parenting a teenager with a crazy workload and travel schedule that has her bouncing between Seoul and New York City (and sometimes Paris). We also wanted to know where she and David spend time in the city.

What does David think about what you do?

He is very supportive and proud of the work I do… in fact, he is one of my biggest fans

David went to your show this past February in New York. Does he enjoy attending your fashion shows?

Yes, he always attends my shows and I love having him there with me. He especially loves to see celebrities that attend!

Does your son ever ask you to design clothes for him?

No, he is more into sports than fashion, especially not women’s fashion! He does however on occasion ask me to play outdoor sports with him.

How do you balance being a mother with your work schedule?

It is a challenge to balance both motherhood and a career… during the week I concentrate on work and on the weekends I concentrate on my family and spend my time with my husband and son.

Any advice for other working moms (or dads)?

I believe it is important to set an example and to teach your children to have pride in all they do and to appreciate the value of work.

What do you love most about New York City for kids?

There are so many cultural places to visit that are both educational and fun…

What are you and your son’s favorite things to do together in the city?

We love visiting The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Natural History, Broadway shows and my son loves to go to Central Park.

Our favorite thing to do together is to spend an entire day visiting new exhibitions and openings at the museums and art galleries.
